You didn't say whether you were on 10.2 or 10.1, but this is controlled in 
10.1 by magicdev, and on 10.2 with gnome-volume-manager.  Both are controlled 
by the gnome-volume-properties applet (yes, in KDE too), or you can 'urpme 
magicdev' or 'urpme gnome-volume-manager' but if you do this, at least on 
10.2, you will lose the automount usb device feature.
