The numbering depends on how the hardware on the motherboard is set up,
and how the jumpers are connected from the front of the case to the
motherboard. On the other hand, you usualy don't need to know how they
are numbered, unless you are writing udev rules that respond to
something plugged into a specific socket. (I don't know why you would
need to do this...)

You can see what the system detects by running "lsusb" from the cli, or
"usbview" from the GUI if you have it installed.
