I see PClinux is another live distro which can also be installed. How
does it help if it detects the card reader?

it is a well maintained Mandrake based LiveCD,
so if your card is recognised there Mandriva could too.
also, contrary to Mandriva,
the developers of PCLinux actually support their users publicly.
