After all, I don't know a thing about Windows.

After using most of the day reinstalling Windows XP on my
friends PC I know something : I'll never do it again. Worst
crap I've ever seen, including CP/M and DOS.
Now, what can I do to make him at least feel a little secure ?
After the initial install - which took about 3 hours and 20
reboots the box immediately was infected with some viruses and
trojans. I then installed :
1. Firewall from Sygate
2. AVG antivirus
3. Microsoft anti-spyware
and cleared all malware.
Then,
1. I tried to uninstall Micsoft Internet Explorer, but
couldn't. 2. Installed Firefox 1.04 with adblock and disabled
its installer. 3. Installed Thunderbird
4. Disabled Windows Update
5. Defragged the disk called c:\
6. Ran a complete scan on scan.sygate.com - all clear
7. Swore some very bad words
8. Had a cold beer
9. Made the above promise.
So, did I miss anything ? - Can I let him have his box again ?
TIA
Kaj Haulrich.
Add to your collection of software NEEDS:
* Spybot Search and Destroy
* AutoPatcherXP (do a search on www.betanews.com) - this is a
package of all the necessary patches from MS that you can install
in one fell swoop instead of sitting around waiting for the
massive patches/updates download.
* Turn off automatic updates
* Turn off background intelligent file transfers
* Turn off UPNP and SSPD
* Turn off Smart Card and Smart Card Helper
* Turn off Portable Media Serial Number
* Turn off Remote Registry
* Turn off Error Reporting
* Turn off Security Centre
* Turn off Windows Firewall (not Sygate)
* Turn off Messenger
* Turn off Alerter
* Turn off Remote Desktop Assistance
* Turn off System Restore (it doesn't work anyways and is more
than just a waste of disk space)
Quite a bit of work just to get ONE workstation up and running
properly, don't ya think?
And folks freak out when I tell them how much it basically costs
to do a re-installation (that is, until they SIT and SEE what has
to be done and how it affects their system, then they shut up
because they're humbled at what is necessary to have a safe box).
Good heavens, Stephen. And I thought I was done...
Is everything turned off in the "Control Panel" ? - or from the apps
themselves ?
In order to be able to install a real OS besides this crap I tried
to shrink the shit with Knoppix, but noticed an additional
partition, called d:\ (hda2). It contains something Billyboy
calls "restore" or some such. Can I safely just wipe it ?
TIA
Kaj Haulrich.
Kaj; The best way to make a killing with Windows is to finsih all the
modifications as suggested in this thread, then defrag the hard drive,
and Ghost the whole partition to either a CD, DVD, or a storage hard
drive somewhere.
When your Windows Users come back (and they will - count on it!), you
can restore their systems in less than an hour and charge them for 4 hours!
Or, you can simply set them up with their own set of restore CD's.
