Add to your collection of software NEEDS:

* Spybot Search and Destroy
* AutoPatcherXP (do a search on www.betanews.com) - this is a
package of all the necessary patches from MS that you can install
in one fell swoop instead of sitting around waiting for the
massive patches/updates download.
* Turn off automatic updates
* Turn off background intelligent file transfers
* Turn off UPNP and SSPD
* Turn off Smart Card and Smart Card Helper
* Turn off Portable Media Serial Number
* Turn off Remote Registry
* Turn off Error Reporting
* Turn off Security Centre
* Turn off Windows Firewall (not Sygate)
* Turn off Messenger
* Turn off Alerter
* Turn off Remote Desktop Assistance
* Turn off System Restore (it doesn't work anyways and is more

If you turn off "System Restore" - yes. And if there is space on the D:\
drive, you can create a dir there called D:\TEMP and then point the
environment variables to use D:\TEMP as the temp (/tmp) directory.

In the CONTROL PANEL, choose COMPUTER MANAGEMENT then SERVICES => that
is where you can turn off the unnecessary services.

To change environmental variables, click START => then RIGHT-CLICK My
Computer => Choose PROPERTIES, choose => ADVANCED => Environment
Variables => Under the SYSTEM VARIABLES, change the TMP & TEMP from
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP to D:\TEMP. You might as well then also put the SWAP on
the D:\ as well => so on the same property sheet, choose PERFORMANCE =>
SETTINGS => ADVANCED => VIRTUAL MEMORY => CHANGE => You will see that
the initial SWAP file is on the C:\ drive, remove that one making note
of the swap file size, and then choose D:\ and make it the same size as
the one that was on the C:\ drive.

I have winXP (dual boot). I rarely use it, but need it for scanner and Family Tree. Not using the internet with it - do I need to do the above to make it secure? Already have some of the stuff like AVG, Spybot - but haven't kept up with it since using mandriva for most everything.

I run Windows XP and Windows 2000 on separate hard drives and I do not use either for web access - with no problems. The Windows XP has no anti-virus and is used for burning CD's and phone troubleshooting of customer systems. Windows is a lot better when its not allowed on line :) (dont tell the linux folks I aid that)
