What do folks recommend as a editor to use on this low spec box .......
P166, 160 RAM, 2 Gb HD.
I like Nedit ( that should start a flame war ) but Scite also has a small
foot print and few dependancies.
Then of course there's the less windows like ones such as xemacs and gvim
which are the more pure text editors rather than the more mouse driven
programmes mentioned above. If the user has a windows background these two
have a big learning curve. Having dumped windows 15 years ago on my boxen
at home I still don't feel at home with these pure text editors.
While talking about progs for low spec machines I have to mention some
other apps which are not in Mandrake because they are commercial, but not
expensive.
Want a M$ Word compatible wordprocesser, have a look at textmaker.
OpenOffice takes over one minute to open on my beautiful and much loved
Thinkpad 600E whereas textmaker takes 4 seconds. I have even used Word
templates and all the macros worked.
Likewise planmaker is an excel compatable spreadsheet. Both are produced by
softmaker. see http://www.softmaker.com. They used to do a free version
with limited functionality ( you could save your doc so it was highly
usable ) but it lacked things like spellchecker, don't know if its still
around but it was good enough to convince me to fork out the cash.
As for browsers Mandrake comes with Dillo which is blisteringly fast but
doesn't do java, flash, frames etc. so some sites don't display very well (
or at all ).
For mail Sylpheed works well although I use Mulberry ( http://cyrusoft.com
), again a comercial programme, because of the great way it can synchronise
with an IMAP server when used on a laptop.
Displaying pdf files go for xpdf, ( part of Mandrake ) or acrobat 5 (
acrobat 7 will take a long time to load on a 166 )
Time organiser, try ical ( with Mandrake )
When I say its part of Mandrake it might not be on the disks but in the
contrib directory on the mirrors.
Remember, the best software in the world is what works for you!!!!!
Cheers
Nigel
