I suppose it is a bit late, now, but if that was your purpose, booting with a
"Linux from CD" distro such as PCLINUX OS or Knoppix would have been the way
to go. These distros (there are several) are all on a bootable CD, and they
run from the CD--nothing is installed to the hard drive, although with a bit
of tweaking, you can write files to the drive (create a "persistent home
directory". I usually recommend Knoppix, because it seems to have an almost
flawless ability to recognize hardware. These distros run from RAM, so they
are memory hogs, though. If you are short on RAM, Damn Small Linux (DSL) is
the way to go. It is also Knoppix based, but it can run on as little as 16
Megs. It is GUI, but somewhat minimalistic for a newbie to have to learn
from.
You can also fix some fairly severe screw-ups by booting with Knoppix, making
the files on your drive writeable, and editing out the errors. I wouldn't
want to do this with an NTFS drive, but it may be possible with the Captive
NTFS Tool.

For your new lilo.conf file to work you must as su issue the following
command and get back no errors:
# /sbin/lilo
That is a command and not a directory lookup.
As for editing lilo.conf in the first place : Try the command for your
favourite text editor from the command prompt AND as su, thus:
# kwrite
Now browse to /etc/lilo.conf ~ make your changes AND Save them. Close
kwrite and issue the command as mentioned above.
One last point : If you are not within the OS you wish to control lilo,
then you will need to do a chroot first. Refer to:
# man chroot
if you need this.
