Quick fix:
1.) Uninstall anything Symantec/Noron
2.) Double check - even the "Live Update" get rid of it
3.) Boot into safe mode and delete the -
C:\Program Files\Symantec and C:\Program Files\NortonXXX directories
4.) Double check that all Symantec and Norton programs are removed from the 
Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs applet
5.) Reboot and defrag
6.) Run "Registry Mechanic" if you've got it.
7.) Install AVG Free Personal Edition

Not a joke.
