The generaly recommendation is to avoid ATi unless you really enjoy a 
fight ;-)  OTOH, there are kernel modules for firewire.  One of my 
boxes has an Audigy card with firewire, and the driver appears to load 
perfectly.  I don't have any firewire devices, so I can't test it, 
though.

If someone reports that it worked under MDK 10.0 I would be very 
surprised if you couldn't get it working with 2005/2006.  Before giving 
up on it, try asking about it specifically on this and the Expert list.  
While some people read both lists, many don't, so you need to widen 
your chances that someone knows the key to this.
