which D-link modem is it?

You wouldn't want to use kppp (dialup) for ADSL; the modem calls on its
ownsome, without any assistance from you. A simple connection should do
the trick, with you setting all the stuff up on the machine using
ifconfig <interface>. The device you set up is the connection interface
at the machine end; you don't set the modem up as a device like you do
a dialup modem.

Do you have a static or dynamic IP address from Optusnet? It shouldn't
make much difference either way - let the ADSL modem make the
connection, and then use DHCP to get the IP address to the machine(s).

Someone else might like to chime in about USB connections - but I can
maybe help with the ethernet stuff.

Cheers,
