Whoops! sorry, I wasn't clear. <interface> should be replaced by the 
interface you want to look at, but what you got with ifconfig tells the 
story: you've got a connection and an ip address using ppp, and 
ethernet isn't running (you can ignore lo for the moment). Your ppp 
connection is working - can you fire up your browser and see whether it 
connects?

I take it it's the *other* machine that has ethernet. If you can get 
connected on this one, with the USB connection, you can maybe use 
ethernet between this machine and the other machine to get your network 
set up.

Still trying to download the specs - be a little while, doing a big 
update.
