Right now my municipality is digging trenches all over our tiny village and burying thick, orange snakes in order to shine some laser light into our humble homes. The contractor (local power company) says that I need a fiber optic modem, but as usually they know jack shit about decent operating systems. Recommendations, please :

1. If light comes in at one end, what comes out in the other ?

Light

Usualy the modem has a fiber optic connection and an ethernet connection. From your end, it isn't any different then a cable modem/DSL connection, except a bit faster.

3. They offer 100 Mb/sec for around $80/month, which is a bit more expensive than my present DSL at 4 Mb/sec... Is it worth it ?

That is something you have to deside for your self. It depends on how you use the connection. If you mainly surf the web, and read email, then it probably isn't. If you do a lot of uploading/downloading, then it might be. It also depends on what they offer as part of their package. Do you get one or more static IPs, and can you run servers? If I could run my own mail and web server on their network, I would be tempted. I miss running my own servers.
