Kat is the desktop search tool in 2006. Many people have had problems where their home directory already has a good deal of data. On my laptop, with a clean /home, kat runs without any problems at all, so I suspect that it is the sheer quantity of data that is choking it. The only reason I can see for it being implicated in browsing is that any files saved to your hard disk would be indexed - but I wouldn't have thought that temporary files would be included.
