Permission
checks are by user number, not user name. The numbers are assigned
sequentially as you create users. If you created them in a different
order,
you might not own your own home directory as far as the OS is concerned.
Can
you create any other file or directory within your home directory?

Hi Ron,

Yes... that's the puzzling thing!

I can make new folders and copy stuff into the folder /home/jrh/ and all
subfolders with no problems....

I'll have a quick look at userdrake, and see what I am... I'm normally 500...

Cheers,

James
Running "ls -l" in your home directory will show you who owns the
files. If they come back owned by some other user, you know you
have problems. Sometimes the easy way is to edit /etc/passwd to
reflect the old user numbers. (vipw works great for this.) Yo may
need to change the owner of the files in /var/spool/mail after doing
this.

You can also run "chown -R <user name> /home/<user name>" or
"chown -R <user name>:<group name> /home/<username>"
as long as you only need to fix the /home directories.
