Sorry - I didn't see Tom's post about dumbed-down distros, but without
more detail on his point, I'm not sure I understand what he meant by that.
This wasn't a recent post by Tom, Lanman, rather what he's mentioned in the
past. How Windows has been "dumbed" down to its users, and one of the better
things about Linux is that its -not- like that.
At least, thats what I've gleaned from Toms' posts, and I very much agree.
If I've misunderstood what Tom has meant by his posts, then I apologize, and
I'm sure he'll step in and correct me.
Hi Guys 'n' Gals. After a 12 hour stint, doing onsite support for a
client, I finally made it back. Phew! What a pain!
Before I stick my foot in my mouth and say all the wrong things, I'd
like to be clear about something. As for the 'dumbed-down' distro issue,
I just wanted to say that it seems that tweakers will always be
tweakers, and no matter how much a distro gets simplified, they will
continue to tweak to their heart's content.
After all, it's what we/they do! Yes/No?
But I'm not thinking that things should be screwed up or locked down to
the point where people can't make significant changes, not by a long shot!
No, what I mean is that we should make sure that everything works as
much as possible and I don't think that's an impossible task. PCLOS has
done a pretty good job of it, but anyone who knows their way around a
Linux distro can do a whack of interesting and destructive things to it.
But the one major value of PCLOS is the fact that virtually all of the
default services and daemons work properly right from the get-go and
most of the essential basics like 3D video and wireless work without a
lot of head-bashing.
The vast majority of people who discover and try out Linux are
apprehensive when they get started and the easier that a new distro
works post-install, the better and sooner that they like it and start
feeling comfortable with it.
Three things will make that migration a lot simpler - ease of
installation and initial setup, great documentation written with newbies
in mind and a distro that does a great job of supporting it via mailing
lists and forums.
That's about it for now. It's 1:30 am here and I need sleep. I subbed
onto Bill's list and I'm waiting to see what develops in the next week
or so. Hope this is the beginning of a great distro!
Lanman
