I am indeed a newbie.

Can someone explain to me why sometimes I have to change
mirrors 5 times to complete an update.

I have been learning since 8.0. I have not yet learned
why the update process is so badly organized.

Tell me a mirror lags real time............I understand

Tell me mirrors are down for various reasons.......I
understand

Tell me that it is EVERY GD TIME I UPGRADE......I don't
understand.

The hardest single act in Linux for me has been upgrade.

Rarely do I have a problem-free experience with urpmi in
any of it's magical forms.

Am I stupid?

Lee,

I don't think you're stupid, but that's just me. My guess is that you're using bad/slow mirrors - ie., mirrors which are typically slow or overworked.

Here's the ones I use for Mandriva 2006. If that's the version you're running, copy/paste these into your /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg file and delete the others that aren't working. Then update them all so that you can receive the new package lists. Copy them verbatim into your file.

contrib ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/contrib {
  hdlist: hdlist.contrib.cz
  key-ids: 78d019f5
  update
  with_hdlist: media_info/hdlist.cz
}

main ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrakelinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/main {
  hdlist: hdlist.main.cz
  key-ids: 70771ff3
  update
  with_hdlist: media_info/hdlist.cz
}

updates ftp://ftp.uninett.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrakelinux/official/updates/2006.0/main_updates {
  hdlist: hdlist.updates.cz
  key-ids: 22458a98
  list: list.updates
  update
  with_hdlist: media_info/hdlist.cz
}

Then save the file and either run the update command in Mandriva's Control Center, or use the following commands in a console/shell;

urpmi.update main
urpmi.update contrib
urpmi.update updates

If you're running a different version of Mandriva, you'll have to adjust the lines in your config file accordingly and your best bet is to use the ftp links in my example above and then navigate to the version you're using. Then copy/paste the change into this adjusted config file.

Don't forget that you need to run the update command once in a while to make sure that your lists are the same as the ones on the mirror.
