What size was the kernel-source file?
I had the same issue not too long ago due to an oddball kernel-source
file (first time on many years, it was actually a mis-named file on one
mirror.) The file should be about 49 megs in size. I've done hundreds of
kernel upgrades prior to that, though with no trouble.
Also, do a uname -a from a konsole and make sure you're really running
the kernel you think you are.
How exactly did you install the kernel and kernel-source?
Let us know what you find.
