That was not it. Finally gave up and loaded the dkms-nvidia package 7676 from 
the DVD and redownloaded the nvidia 7676 driver and have  ut2004 running 
again.  Not at all sure what the problem was with the 8178 packages.  So I 
will wait and try again when a 9xxx nvidia driver comes out. : )
