First, I don't know if you knew this or not, but the version you have
is probably the Beta, since the full version was only released to
Club members about a week and a half ago, and the magazine would have
ended up with only a Beta available to put inside.
Second, that Beta had a bug that gives you a kernel panic if you have
2 optical drives in your machine - CD, CDRW, DVD, and/or DVDRW - take
your pick. I suspect that this is your problem.
This is it for sure, as googling confirmed. One might have thought
that the magazine might have tested it first - or at least made it
clear that it was a beta. If they had, I probably would have left it
alone.
Third, when you first boot the system and you see the Lilo screen,
you can hit the ESC key to access the rescue options. I haven't had
the problem you're having, but theoretically, you should be able to
type the word 'rescue' and go from there.
My suggestion is that you disconnect one of your Optical drives, do
the install, then upgrade the kernel-source and main kernels, then
revise Lilo ("lilo -v" in a root console), reboot and remove the
default kernel, then shut the system down, re-attach your second
optical drive and restart. It's a bit of a pain, but that's faster
than re-installing 2006 from scratch.
Er, that looks a bit complicated. Upgrading kernels is something I've
never got into before. Is there an easy to understand guide available
anywhere? I've reinstalled 2006 for the time being. Doing that's bit
of a pain but at least I have a system that more or less functions again.
