Hi all,

I'm considering upgrading to a x64 machine after
seeing a rather nice deal on tiger. The mobo

would be

an Asus A8N-SLI NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX, and CPU AMD
Athlon 64 3200+. Video card will have to come

later

but will obviously be something nvidia. I'm kind

of

unfamiliar with 64-bit computing and even more
unfamiliar with the task on Linux. But as I
understand it, you need three things to take

advantage

of 64-bt: 64 bit OS, 64 bit device drivers, and 64

bit

applications.

Mandriva has a 64 OS, so that's cleared. 64 bit
applications will probably be more common in the
future... But, it is the device drivers that I am
concerned about. I see nvidia offers 64-bit

drivers

for Linux. However, I am not sure about ASUS...
1) Will I need and do any of you know if ASUS

offers

64 bit linux drivers? The site appears to be down

at

the moment, but maybe some of you have expereince.

2) Should I even bother with 64-bit? Do any of

you

run Mandriva's 64-bit version and what is your
feedback?

3) Any other thoughts you guys would like to add

on

the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

The Asus A8N-SLI series of boards work well with
Mandriva, nvidia has drivers for the onboard lan but it also has a marvell onboard which works out the box.

I am quite happy with my 64 bit once you get used to
it and can work around the multimedia and flash pitfalls.

What sort of multimedia and flash pitfalls? Are you
not able to use either on your 64 bit installation? Also, I'm curious what you mean when you say "once you
get used to it"...are there other issues as well? Did
you notice any sort of performance difference over 32
bit (increase/decrease)? Sorry to slam w/a barrage of
questions, but I am very curious...

The codecs are 32 bit and don't work too well with 64 bit even thogh vlc for example now works and did not a couple of months ago. Flash does not work out the box you need to use a 32 bit firebox or "gnash" i think its called but last time i used it it crashed.

Performance wise compiling a kernel with 32 bit takes about 3 hours and on the 64 bit it takes 1 hour.

By once you get used to it i mean it is not very easy installing extra packages, the dependancy issue is a bit of a nightmare.
