Thanks! That did the trick. A new copy of ndiswrapper and configuring via commandline as well as MCC (not sure why I had to do both) in the 'reconfigure network adapter' and 'wireless networking' sections (BOTH !) got it going with an IP. It seems the two sections of MCC do not line up as reconfiguring should set up the network card, but looking in the Wireless Network section shows none of the same settings apart from the IP Address.
I'm definitely steering clear of the Netcomm WiFi PCI cards from now on. My ADSL NB9W modem seems okay though. I just have to wait until I lose Pair Gain and get my ADSL line going.
