For processes that won't die with a regular kill, go to the command line and
do:

kill -9 <pid>...

A regular kill asks the process to shut itself down, but if it's hung, it
wont' respond. The -9 option tells the system to shut the process down
without asking it. This almost always works, though I have had the rare time
when I've had to reboot to kill a really stubborn process. Shouldn't happen,
but nothing's perfect.
