Amen sir! Amen! Hehehe. Anyway.....
To get back on the topic, it is a very good idea to put on some AS-5 for
the CPU paste. Doing so guarentees 5C drops maybe over stock paste. Just
put it on a rice sized grain amount, then spread it evenly with a credit
card or straight edge. I also recommend getting a decent aftermarket
cooler as those will lower temps much. I always recommend quality parts
even if the system won't be overclocked. A Noctua 120 is good for a Conroe
If you do Conroe, get a 6600 probably. Getting a Conroe will allow you
to get the fastest type processors out. (For those who don't keep up
with the latest hardware, it beats a FX-62 I think 15-20% in all
benchmarks on the average stock.) Yes they just were released by Intel,
but from what I've seen, tis worth it. The problem is there aren't any
good motherboards out yet as it's a brand new processor. But people have
been loving the results from them so far :).

good DDR2 RAM
For the rest of the system, get a power supply made from companies like
Enermax, Forton, OCZ that are known to run good. I've heard the
Powerstream OCZs run great, or Forton makes some great cheaper ones. The
rest should come as you go :). Sorry I can't recommend a good mobo but
I'm sure someone will have some ideas for Conroe.
As far as AMD, if you MUST go that way (not bashing AMD, they just don't
have the fastest processors at the moment), anything NVIDIA based will
have guarenteed Linux support. Here's a good AM2 list:

The nice part about AM2 is it's cheaper than Conroe. You can get a new
3800+ X2 for like 150 dollars as they cut the prices nicely. I'd say the
RAM is the same, and you can buy a NVidia graphics card depending on
what the person does :). Power supplies are also the same as Intel.
I do hope this gives you some great ideas.
