to work either, although it did work on my LAN.
So - everything went exceedingly well until I was there - talk about
looking like an idiot. :-))

Try downloading PCLinuxOS and give it a try. It is a Mandriva-based
LiveCD which you can install if you decide and will install in less than
20 minutes.
It is fully pre-configured, has really great video and printer drivers,
a very helpful community and support, and should do a better job for you
overall. It includes 3D Video drivers and better wireless integration as
well.
PCLinuxOS is a single CD and the latest version is 'MiniMe .93'. I think
you'll be able to solve your problems with this and you can boot as a
LiveCD and test the hardware before you install it, including LAN and
Internet connections.
Also, try changing any network cables that your friend might be using.
