Hello,

I have just joined the n00b list, so I thought I'd introduce myself.

I have used mandrake sporadically (sporadic= once a year) for the last four or so years. I would get a disto in a magazine or download it, install it on some spare junk machine, play around with it for a little, get frustrated, then never use it again until I came across another disto. I am fairly proficient with windows, and just have been too busy to go through the learning curve to get fully on Linux. So I remain an extreme newbie in the Linux forum. But lately the power of Linux is becoming more and more apparent and so I must get my butt in gear!

So, that aside, here is my initial questions.

1.) I downloaded Mandriva just last week. When selecting what packages to be installed, I selected most of the options (workstation, web and ftp server, etc). Once installation was complete, and was logged into KDE, no programs were listed on the start menu, and the "additional apps" button on the menu was grayed out. Did I do something incorrect? I have since dug out and installed a copy of Makdrake 10.

2.) Now using Mandrake 10, the first thing I did was download FireFox. The install directions say "unzip to desired directory". In Linux, what is the equivalent of the "program files" in windows?

Thanks for your time,
Jano
