Eric,
I've now got PCLinuxOS on my laptop and PC they are both old machines
but work very well with linux. I found that using 2006 and Mandriva
One that I always had such problems just getting the basics to work-
java, flash, mplayer etc. I often ended up reinstalling as I felt that
my filesystem was a mess following all the mistakes and failed
attempts at ./confuse or make && make a mess!
I haven't tried 2007 yet although i bought the magazine to get a dvd copy.
For a real newbie like me it seemed that Texstar had brought Linux
into the real world at last.
