You probably need to add the nolapic option to your file /etc/lilo.conf
and run lilo (on root). Here is part of mine:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-2mdv
label="2.6.17-2"
root=/dev/hda3
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.17-2mdv.img
append="nolapic resume=/dev/hda4 splash=silent"
vga=788
