Yes, it must be....
I have it running ok on the Windows partition on the same box!
Maybe it's a software issue, as I've had MCC "Exit Abnormally" on a few
occasions whilst trying to configure it tonight....

is sane installed? xsane?
what does "sane find-scanner" say? what happens if you start xsane from
a command line? (as root?)
