I had the same scanner running on MDK 9.2 for awhile.  The paraport 
configuration is a Real Kludge.  I just gave in and ran the #$@&! thing 
under root (sudo).  And, yes, thereafter remember to sudo chown/chmod 
everything you scanned.

Then I found an Epson Perfection 1250 (USB) in a second hand thrift shop 
for USD $2.50.  Life has been smoother ever since.....

   (It was hard to pay out the $2.50 for the Epson scanner -- because I 
    had gotten the Umax for free...  :-)
