I promise this drive can be
partitioned and have a linux filesystem
installed. really... on the windows disk, run scan disk, then defrag
then start up with the Mandriva one or Knoppix, and see if they are
willing to install for you... (as long as there is about 10 gigs at the
end of the drive free, it should just partition and install for you.
most Linux distros will not mount an ntfs file system as read-write
because the support for writing to an ntfs file system is not safe for
non M$ lic. software.
instead of Demo linux try running the Mandriva one linux OS from the
cdrom, I bet it lets you read from the NTFS file system, but just not
read from it. also please consider that the newest version of demo linux
looks to be about 3 or 4 years old, this is quite old for a linux distro
version, there has been considerable improvements since 28/07/2002, when
the latest version of demo linux came out, as far as I can tell.

the amount of "ram left" in
doze has nothing to do with the amount of
ram a Linux system see or needs, unless it is running in a VM inside 'doze.

----cjs reply----
ok so i booted to mandriva 2007 (live cd) and checked.. yup i can partition it
with a linux partition and mandriva 2007 even detected my hard drive as
well..so im thinking that ill go ahead, resize my partition and setup a linux
partition and isntall..

one question. Since my computer can boot from a thumb drive, would it be a good
idea to install mandriva 2007 onto my thumbdrive and just run it from there? (i
have a 1 gig thumbdrive anyways. And what gave me this idea was a thumbdrive i
saw on mandrivas website that had teh latest mandriva installed on there with
3d desktop. that thumbdrive was only 2gigs long.)

i havent tried mounting my ntfs hdd yet..ill get to that in a few minutes, but
ill see if it will allow me to read/write to the hdd. but i remember with
mandrake 10.1 i was able to read/write to a ntfs
 partition if memory serves.

----cjs update----
Ok so i just tried mounting my hdd. Since i had to be the root user to view it,
i could only view it in Konsole. i tried viewing it in the "explorer" or what
ever you call it and it appeared that the regular users (the non root users)
didnt have permissions to access the drive...and also from what i saw, i didnt
have permissions to even write to the drive...
