Hi All,
This new wireless card, as gotten me pulling my hair out bigtime.....
I cant get it to run either with the Linux drivers, or even with ndiswrapper.
The chipset is the Texas Instruments TNETW1130(ACX111).
In ndiswrapper, I have given it the windows drivers it needs (tnet1130.inf and
tnet1130.sys), and then it fails, giving me "could not load ndiswrapper
module", then it tells me I need firmware. I have duly obtained the Windows
firmware fwrad16.bin & fwrad17.bin. Am I right in assuming they need to go
in /etc/ndiswrapper? I've also deposited them in /lib/firmware, just to be on
the safe side!. Another confusing thing.... if I type ndiswrapper -l into a
terminal, I get hardware present, driver present!
On the Linux driver side, I have given it the relevant firmware
in /lib/firmware, and when I try to configure it, I get "unable to to find
network interface for selected device (using acx-pci)".
I'm just about at my wits end here.... I'm about ready to take it back to the
shop where I bought it from, and am in danger of committing a major felony,
by inserting it somewhere about the sales guys person, as he assured me it
would work fine on Linux... am I missing something here?
Cheers,
James
James, It's highly likely that the version of ndiswrapper you're using
isn't compiled properly for the kernel you're using. That's been a
common problem with Mandriva.
If the wireless card is supposed to work in Linux, try using a PCLinuxOS
LiveCD as a test. Once it boots to the login screen, enter as root, and
see if the PCLinuxOS Control Center detects your card. The hardware
detection system will also tell you which kernel module would be
required and a quick 'lsmod' in a terminal will tell you whether the
module is loaded or not.
If not, you should be able to load it using 'modprobe' and the name of
the module as indicated in the Control Center. If you need to revert to
ndiswrapper in PCLinuxOS, you can add it using Synaptic but be sure to
install the dkms-ndiswrapper module as well as the normal ndiswrapper
package - both are needed.
I recommend that you use the normal ethernet connection on your laptop
so that you can run Synaptic. Once the card is running, you can unplug
your cable and run the network setup wizard to configure your card. Then
it's just a matter of connecting to your wireless router, if all goes well.
At least you can run this test as a LiveCD test and you won't have to
install it to your laptop before doing the test. If it works, then the
issue is related to a compatibility issue between your Mandriva kernel
and the kernel module for your wireless card.
You may also be having troubles if the PCMCIA service isn't running or
if this card isn't using a compatible version of the chipset in your
card, since they are often changed for another version by the
manufacturers.
Hope it works out for you.
