Hi,
I suspect some people here can help you more than I,
but just in case they are not looking..
When you ran Xconfigurator you should have gotten a
matrix of possible resolutions and color depth. For
each depth There you can select more than one
resolution. You should be able to also specify a
default resolution (if not hack XF86Config resp.
XF86Config-4 if you are using XFree 4.0.1 which I
believe is what comes with 7.0)
NOTE: RH 7.0 (and for that matter RH 7.1) might decide
on its own that 3.3.6 is better for you than 4.0.1.
If it linked you to 3.3.6 then you must change the
symlink /etc/X11/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86.
In XF86Config[-4] go to the Section "Screen" and set
the default depth there:
Subsection "Display"
           Depth "32" #for instance
           modes "1280x1024" # for instance
EndSubSection

Obviously you will have to do it in XF86Config-4 if
you are running XFree 4.x.x

In order to know which version you run I would simply
launch with startx 2>logfile and the look in that file
for version and error messages if any...
If you use an interactive login then look in this list
with google, someone indicated how to get the version
a couple of weeks ago (I don't remember...)
Hope that helps
cheers
Lionel
