Just so happens that I am installing Debian Linux (Glibc 2.2) on a
ThinkPad also and am having the exact same problems.
I had previously (quickly) tried compiling the source but ran into
missing directories, make files and some other assorted troubles. I
thought the Binaries would be quicker... looks like I was wrong! :-)
