hey pete,

thanks for the pointer.  that solved the initial problem!  i looked through the archives, but
didn't (quickly) find that info myself.

Now i'm trying to get XFree86 to work with the SuperSavage chip in the T23 Thinkpad that
i have (see the article:

[Newbie]S3 SuperSavage/IXC16 (IBM Thinkpad T23) support in any release???

it turns out that S3 has released a driver for this, but it's based on a slightly older patch
level of the savage driver.  i've got it sort of working, but it needs more polish.

P.S.  this posting looks so awkward because i had a hard time replying; i set myself up for
digest delivery, but that meant your posting took a long time to arrive in my mail box, so
i flipped to non-digest.  but with that change i never got your posting at all (or at least
not yet, 12+ hours later).  so i'm emailing the web page to ``[EMAIL PROTECTED]''.

Boy, archives are great: a previous answer from Alan:

remove /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/glide_drv.o

and try again.
