Thanks for the quick responses.
After posting I went to take another look at the XF86Config.new file created when I
installed 4.1. I uncommented "NoAccel" option and was able to start X (somewhat)
correctly.
I probably won't try exploring the more advanced capabilities of the card until I've
got the basics stable.
re: motherboard question from Paul Nixon:
ABIT KG7 RAID motherboard. Card is AGP (Universal).
Now I've got X running, but the windows and fonts are _extremely_ small and I can't
get the Gnome or KDE desktops...but I'm sure those are just configuration changes.
