I downloaded the binaries for 4.1.0 from the Xfree site and attempted to
install them on my Compaq Armada 3500. My original setup was a Redhat 7.1
with XFree 4.0.1. But I believe the actual driver being use was the 3
series. When I issue a startx, I only get a blank screen. I can not
ctrl-c or ctrl-alt-backspace out of it. ctrl-alt-del does let me reboot.
My first time installing was to install directly over the working X setup.
When this failed, I removed /etc/X11 and /usr/X11R6 and then did another
install. I installed all of the options and I still had the blank screen.
I removed the directories and tried again without any of the options and it
still did not work. I have ran strace, it looks like xinit gets to the
point of waiting for data of the AF_INET socket for X0 in the temp
directory. The X server (XFree86) goes really to the point of creating the
AF_INET socket for X0 and output log stuff. And then it hangs. If I pipe
the output of startx to a log file I get an xinit: Resource temporarily
unavailable (errno 11). But I think this due to the ctrl-alt-del. I get
no other error message. I have tried xf86config to create a config file.
xf86cfg crashes with lots of undefined symbols in .o files. I get the same
results with a config file for Xconfigurator. I tried a "NoDDC" option but
still no luck. Any help would be appreciated.
