I removed the glide_drv.o. That prevents xf86cfg from crashing but it now
comes up with just a blank screen (All black). I have restored the
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, xinitrc.d and Xclients from the previous install
but still end up with just a blank screen. Any other options to try would
be appreciated.

try:
rm /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/glide_drv.o
to get rid of the undefined symbols error. from
http://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/Xfree86/4.1.0/ERRATA
