Maybe he chose something incorrectly, but if he did like me, he probably
had no clue the installation utility used by his distro's CD wasn't
bright enough to assume his video card wasn't near state of the art. The
installation configurators of late seem to think everyone is using much
newer hardware than used to be assumed, with no automatic provision for
discovering the actual card in use and acting accordingly.
I installed several new distros well over a dozen times over about 6
weeks last month and this without a getting an operational X. Finally
after many requests for help someone suggested my card needed "NoAccel"
uncommented in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. The installers gave no clue that
this parameter was now required, contrary to successfully installing 4
older distros on the same machine with the same video card.
