Have you run Xconfig?
You need to configure 4.1.0 for your Radeon, also I've heard bad
things about ATi's cards and XFree86 (with the exception of the
Mach64).
Remember you need to configure your scan codes properly for both
your moniter and your video card, the XFree86 SVGA standard server
(ie: NOT optimized ) for your card may fail becasue you have a Radeon
(R20? ) with 32 MB of SDR (unknowen RAMDAC!) so your server starts
tries to draw the basic window and freezes trying to access the board
memory without compatable drivers.
Pretty harsh huh!
Well ATi doesn't support Linux in any way but I'm sure if you look
for the appropriate server (thought of CVS'ing it?) like a newer
version of XFree86 they may have already fixed your problem.

Hello,
I have a feeling this is in here somewhere, but I cannot find it...I
have installed Debian linux (2.2), and then downloaded and installed
XFree86 4.1.0 (I have a Radeon 32M SDR PCI board). Along with
everything
else, I installed xfs. Now when I boot linux it gets to the line
about
starting the X Font Server and hangs. It does the same thing
regardless
of whether I use the boot floppy or boot from the HD.
So, I have two questions...how can I get it to stop (or skip) this
step
so I can even edit the files?
Also, how do I find out what is causing the hang?
