The CRTC-Registers contain the the configurations a monitor works with (resolution, hsync, vsynxc and so on). Every CRT-Monitor has this registers. If initializing or changing the graphics mode they were read out so that the driver of graphics adapter uses correct settings and don't damages the monitor. The TFT-Display is a completely different thing. It don't really needs any frequencies or other things. The choice of resolution is also a simple one. So they contain only a minimum of information for compatibility or nothing (or wrong informazions) , because a notebook specific driver could know the needed information. What I don't know, where the kernel gets the information for framebuffer mode. So this could be a good next starting point. Other question: can you work with higher color depths than 16 bits in framebuffer mode?
