probably because *it IS* 4.0.3. 
Do X -version to be sure...
the screen switching to 320x200 is usually a sign that
no driver was found...
It is difficult to help you more before knowing for
sure whether you are running 3.3.6 or 4.0.3 (both of
them coming with RH 7.1 and the installation program
deciding on its own which one to activate depending on
your hardware)
