I had the same problem: RH 7.1 decided 3.3.6 was best
for my graphic card...
To change
1. rename /etc/X11/X to something easy to remember (I
use /etc/X11/X336)
2. in /etc/X11 make a symlink to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 and name it X
If my memory does not let me down (I am not on my box)
it should be
ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X
(or the other way around ;^)
3. be aware that XF86Config-4 will then be used when
you type startx
good luck
