Did you look at both XF86Config and XF86Config-4? I once spent an entire afternoon trying to get a GeForce DDR to display in 1600x1200, only to find out I'd been hacking the wrong file...

I'm running the 2.4.12 kernel and I have the agp option installed, and support for the rage 128 installed as part of the kernel. My monitor is a Dell 1726T-HS (H:30-85kHz; V:48-150Hz) which worked on windows with the Rage fury pro at 1280x1024 with 24bit color and a refresh in the high 70's, but I don't remember exactly. Exact specs for the monitor are available here (http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/dta/97793/1.htm). I would like to run X with similar settings, because resolution is the main reason I bought the rage card to begin with. When I run xf86config, I put in the frequencies I listed above, selected the ATI Rage 128 driver (r128, #36), set the video ram to 32MB (32768kb) set the resolution to 1280x1024, default color to 24 bit, and run it, but it always, no matter what settings I play with comes up with 640x480 at what I can only guess is 16 bit color. I can't switch modes, because <ctrl><alt><+> and <ctrl><alt><-> don't work. It's seems almost as if X is totally ignoring my XF86Config altogether. Anybody have a similar experience and hopefully a solution? I really don't want to switch back to windows...
