Okay, I'll try that, but I doubt the available fonts are the problem.

What would such a section look like? My original XFree86 3.3 config
I think used 16 as the depth.

I'm not quite sure I follow. It's in the "Monitor" section now, should
I create a subsection within "Monitor" for them?

Yeah, I think something has changed:
