Hi;
I have just installed Suse 7.3 Pro on a P200 with 80 Mb Ram. The Linux
Swap partition is on hdc2 (200 Mb), while the two others are on boot,
hda5, ext2, 2.4 Gb, and root, hda4, ext2, with 3.7 Gb.
The Graphic Card is a Cirrus CL-GD5446 with 2 Mb RAM (PCI), the monitor
an Escom 1503B1 corresponding obviously to a DAEWOO manufactured screen
of the same name. I found it has hor. 30 - 64 and vert. 47 to 120.
I do have an .inf-File for it, so I could correct the monitor name and
indicate the resolution. Still, the test did not show a proper test
picture, only parts of a much too big picture were seen in the lower
half of the screen. This happened with all tested resolutions and
refresh rates.
The graphic card was NOT recognized during the installation procedure
/YAST2). So I continued without X.
Question one: It seems the graphic card is included both in 3.3.6 and
4.1.0 - but what does an ABSOLUTE NEWCOMER to Linux now have to do? I do
have internet access from a Win98-machine and wonder if, in case I have
to download something, I can transfer this via diskette to the Linux
machine (there is also Win98 on that machine, but it is not connected to
the Internet or a network at all yet.)

Question two: how do I close down my system, while in text mode? The
'logoff' command, which I have found, will only lead to a new login
possibility, but not close the computer down. Is it correct to just
power it off?

Question 3: My soundcard, a Highscreen Sound Boostar 16 3D, was
recognized and configured. Still, the TEST button did not lead to any
sound. Is there a command which would lead to a sound being transmitted
to the speakers, so that I could still test it this way?

I DO have the nice big book by Michael Kofler in its newest edition -
but that seems QUITE DIFFICULT to help in the first steps...

I would appreciate some tips - but bear in mind that today is really my
very first day with Linux, and ALL seems new. So please keep your
explanations like when you talk to your grandpa...

Hope somebody finds a moment to put me on the right road...
Regards,
Rup (Hamburg, Germany)
