Lou, For your box, are you going into init3 or init5 when you boot up? Also sounds like you're using the XFree86 that normally comes with Red Hat 7.2. Your video card probably has between 8192 or 4096 for a VideoRam setting within your XF86Config file within /etc/X11/.
Sometimes its easier to do your editing of the XF86Config file when you're booting up into init 3. Hopefully some of this helps out.
