Thank you for responding to my request.

I boot to login command prompt, i.e. no X interface.

Yes, I'm using the stock RH7.2 X. It's a clean machine. I bought a new board
last Friday and loaded standard RH7.2 on a new disk. The motherboard had an
onboard SIS630 video chipset.
I was having difficulty getting that chipset to work with my monitor. Both
XFree86 --configure, xf86config and Xconfigurator were all giving differnet
results, none of which would produce any viewable screen content. However,
there was a lot of horizontal interfierance lines on the screen (i.e. edge
borders were jaged, which I assume to mean that the horizontal sync was not
correct, even though I had inserted the correct values during configuration and
the correct values where inserted in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.)
I did some investigating by going to the Xfree86 site too look at the status
docs for the SIS630 drivers and also to the SIS web site to see if they had
anything. There were a number of patches of older version of X, i.e. 3.??? and
4.0????. I was using 4.1.0-3 on the new machine.

I also noticed that they made an explicit recommendation to confi the onboard
memory for the card (i.e. the shadow ram) to 4096K only! My new board could
only go down to 8MB. I then decided to buy another card, the ATI. The
configuration process always produced the 320x204 res screen, with no virtual
scrolling, i.e. the screen res was set to 320x204 without any mechanism to move
through the virtual window. ctrl-alt-(+|-) keystrokes didn't work, yet they
worked for the other config???????? Ah!!!!

An aside...... (I'm also having network problems between these machines so
providing config files is somewhat slow).

I have included three txt files with this e-mail, XF86Config.txt,
XF86Config-4.txt and XFree86-log.txt, i.e. the two config file produce by
Xconfigurator and the log file from X.

Apparently others are experiencing similar problems with the config files that
Xconfigurator generates.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

like you're using the XFree86 that normally comes with Red Hat 7.2. Your video
card probably has between 8192 or 4096 for a VideoRam setting within your
XF86Config file within /etc/X11/.
