Have you tried running xf86config? It's a bit harder but I'm almost 100%
certain it will run :-)

Is your videocard setup properly? Seeing you can't run Xconfigurator I assume
it's not so first try setting up your server with xf86config

It's a linux distribution. One without all those fancy config thingies like
sax and Xconfigurator. Those config utilities are made by SuSE and Red Hat
respectivily. Slackware is a pretty basic distribution which is especially
for beginners pretty hard since you'll have to figure everything out on your
own.

Hmm what's the error Xconfigurator gives you? Doesn't it start at all or does
it fail with some message? Do you have any idea on what VGA card is in the
system? My experience with compaq is that there some times is a sticker
somewhere that says how much memory is in there what kind of cpu and the VGA
card. You are gonna need that info. Is it a notebook? You might also have a
look at /proc/pci you'll see all the PCI devices there perhaps your VGA card
is one of them.

This is what the part about my VGA card looks like in /proc/pci

Bus 1, device 0, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 (GeForce2 MX) (rev
161).
      IRQ 10.
      Master Capable. Latency=248. Min Gnt=5.Max Lat=1.
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xdc000000 [0xdcffffff].
      Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd0000000 [0xd7ffffff].

However there are more devices listed there like chipsets networkcards
soundcards etc etc depending on what's in your system and what bus it's on
(ISA/PCI/AGP).
