X is a poweful and complicated system. Remember the first rule of working
with large and powerful systems: "Don't Panic".

X is your friend, you will trust the X with your life soon enough. Even
though it appears monstrous and unusable, it is not so, young one! =)

Let me help you soothe yourself by pointing out how what you just said is
confusing to us.

1) I personally have never gotten xconfigurator to do anything useful for me.
Give up on it.

3) Hardware. What do you have? What is the horizontal and vertical
frequencies of your monitor? How much memory does your video card have? What
modes does it support at what frequencies? If you do not know, find out.
Torture the salesperson or the tech support people if you have to. Put them
on the rack, that's what it is for.

You'll want to know (if you want any 3D acceleration) exactly what card you
have. This can be taken care of when you get something working first.

3) xf86config *or* Check to see if there is some tool that comes with your
distro to help you configure X. Read the books. Or both. MAKE BACKUPS of any
XF86Config file (located most likely at /etc/X11/XF86Config) that works at
all. Add comments at the top like "Works, but mouse is bad." "Works but low
res." "Works but not enough colors." to remind yourself of what it works like.

4) Tweak it. xf86config should give you something that "works". Your distro
should give you something that "works". You usually have to tweak it to get
it to work *right*. "man XF86Config" will get you started in the right place.
Check out the docs at www.xfree86.org for supported hardware and further
instruction.

Any questions, I would love to help. I am in a very good mood today.

Jonathan
