Hi,
1. make sure you are using 4.x.x ("X -version"
-without the quotes- should tell you what you are
running) 
2. use the vesa driver as a way to start, most cards
work with it (svga is 3.x.x)
3. in case you have a default depth in your screen
section check that you have a subsection monitor which
can use it...
